Banco Chambers currently offers four readership positions each year, two from the May intake and two from the September intake for the Bar Practice Course.

Accommodation is offered for the 12 months that a new barrister is required to spend as a Reader. Most readers are invited to remain with our chambers as licensees after their reading period expires.

Ordinarily, in order for a Reader to be offered accommodation in Chambers, he or she is required to read with a member of Banco Chambers. Names of members of Banco available to act as tutors can be provided by the Clerk of Chambers.

Applications for readership should be made on or before 31 January (for the May intake) and on or before 31 July (for the September intake) the year before the accommodation will be available. For example, applications for May 2020 should be submitted on or before 31 January 2019 and applications for September 2020 should be submitted on or before 31 July 2019.

When the application window closes candidates selected for interviews will be contacted promptly to arrange an interview.

Applications should be made by email to the Secretary of the Readers’ Committee, Katherine Richardson SC, and the Clerk, Jeh Coutinho, accompanied by a full curriculum vitae, academic transcript and any other information the applicant wishes to be considered. It is desirable if the names of at least two referees are provided who can be contacted if necessary.

We understand that in exceptional circumstances, an applicant’s decision to come to the Bar may not fit within these timeframes. If that is the case, or if you wish to discuss readership at our Chambers in greater detail, please contact the Clerk.

In late 2019 Banco Chambers will relocate to new premises at 60 Martin Place. The new premises will include four readers rooms and five licensee rooms.
