Clarissa Amato is an experienced advocate practising in commercial litigation, defamation, intellectual property and media law.
Before commencing at the bar in 2008, Clarissa was a solicitor for 7 years in Sydney and London. Whilst in London, she was involved in some of the most significant defamation and privacy cases of the time including Murray v Express Newspapers  EWHC 1908, Richardson v Schwarzenegger  EWHC 2422 and GlaxoSmithKline Plc v Persons Unknown (QBD) 9 May 2006.
Clarissa’s media and entertainment practice covers all aspects of the law of reputation including copyright, trademark, defamation, breach of confidence and consumer law. She acts for both individuals and companies. Clarissa is skilled in advising on and obtaining urgent interlocutory relief. She has a particular interest in the intersection between the laws of defamation, confidence and privacy.
Clarissa’s commercial practice is diverse and ranges from contract disputes, building and construction and consumer law. She is regularly briefed as sole Counsel on both interlocutory and final hearings. Some of Clarissa’s recent work includes acting for Sarah Hanson-Young in her defamation action against Zoo Magazine and acting for the administrators of a multinational shipping company in litigation under the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency.
