Richard McHugh is a versatile silk with a leading commercial and appellate practice. His clients range from banks and accountants (such as Macquarie, RBS, Westpac, PwC, KPMG and Deloitte) to broadcasters and comedians (such as the ABC and the Chaser) to senior religious figures. An experienced jury trial advocate, Richard has also argued many appeals in the intermediate courts of appeal (on questions as diverse as constitutional law, fraud, real property, directors’ duties, the selection of athletes for the Australian Olympic team and the admissibility of coincidence evidence in a criminal prosecution) and several appeals in the High Court of Australia (on questions ranging from the scope of the Supreme Court’s powers to the defamation defence of qualified privilege and the nature of preference shares). He often advises and appears in matters interstate.
