Penelope Abdiel

Penelope accepts briefs in all areas of law, but practises principally in commercial litigation, regulatory proceedings and investigations, and public law and judicial review proceedings. She advises and appears for private sector clients, as well as regulators including ASIC and the ACCC. She regularly appears in all NSW courts and the Federal Court, and has appeared and argued before the Full Federal Court.

Most recently, Penelope acted as Junior Counsel Assisting the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority’s inquiry into the Star Casino’s suitability to hold a casino licence in NSW. She also appeared as junior counsel for ASIC in Federal Court regulatory proceedings brought against Select AFSL, two related entities and a director, culminating in civil penalties totalling $13.5 million and banning orders against the director.

Prior to coming to the bar, Penelope was a senior associate at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Sullivan in Sydney from 2014-2016, and an associate at Scott + Scott Attorneys in New York from 2010-2013. In the US, Penelope litigated complex competition, consumer and securities class actions where she second-chaired and conducted direct and cross-examinations in two federal trials on commercial and competition cases in the United States.
