Ryan is an experienced commercial junior who accepts unled and led briefs primarily in general commercial and corporations disputes, as well as in representative proceedings and family law property matters.

Ryan practices widely in all areas of commercial law. He specialises in insolvency and company law and is regularly briefed in complex shareholder disputes (including claims for breach of directors’ duties), as well as in proceedings concerning large external administrations where he represents insolvency practitioners, creditors and other interested parties. He also accepts briefs to appear in relation to schemes of arrangement.

Some recent cases in which Ryan has appeared include:

  • representing the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in relation to disputation concerning membership of the College’s board;
  • representing the plaintiff shareholder and director in oppression proceedings concerning the Goldstone private equity fund;
  • representing the administrators of IG Power (Callide) Ltd, a joint venturer operating the Callide C Power Station with entities associated with the Queensland Government;
  • representing an unsecured lender of Agripower Australia Ltd applying to set aside a deed of company arrangement;
  • representing a secured lender in a dispute concerning the Personal Property Securities Act 2009 (Cth); and
  • representing the former Chairman of Blue Sky Alternative Investments Ltd in a securities class action, including on appeal to the High Court of Australia concerning the question of power to make a common fund order in favour of solicitors.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Ryan was a solicitor at Allens in the Disputes and Investigations Department and the Tipstaff to the Honourable Justice Black of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
